Well, I’m back in the shop! The doctor released me and reaffirmed 3 times to start out slow and easy. Now, I understand why. The 1st thing I did, with the help of my grandson, was to put my shop back together and figure out where to put the new power tools my doctor recommended that I start using. He is also a hand tool woodworker. Tell you the truth, it going to take some time to get use to them being there. They seem to be in my way. Over the last year, I started getting interested in Kumiko. So, I decided to start making the tools to do it. Yesterday I started to make a Wari kebiki. It looks like a marking gauge with a blade to cut the thin strips of wood. I laid it all out and started to make a through mortise, ¾ by ½ inch. After about 4 hits of the hammer, it was over, and my hand said no more. I guess I should have used the drill press and then cleaned it out, but there is just something about using power tools to make hand tools. Guess what? Today, I’ll be using the drill press to make my 1st power assisted mortise.
