In the Gospels, Jesus often referred to the Scriptures, stating, “as it was written,” a clear indication that He was speaking about the Old Testament or the Tanakh. The apostles, too, grounded their teachings in the Old Testament, using it as the foundation to explain the coming of Christ and the new covenant.
So, why does this matter for us today? Well, if Jesus and His apostles focused on the Old Testament, shouldn’t we also prioritize it in our teaching? The Old Testament is rich with history, prophecy, and wisdom that lays the groundwork for understanding the New Testament. It reveals God’s character, His promises, and His plan for humanity.
When we teach from the Old Testament, we’re not just revisiting ancient texts, we’re connecting with the very roots of our faith. We see how prophecies fulfilled in Jesus are echoed throughout the Old Testament. This continuity deepens our understanding of God’s story and strengthens our faith.
Moreover, many of today’s cultural issues and moral dilemmas can be addressed through the timeless principles found in the Old Testament. It’s teachings on justice, mercy, and righteousness are as relevant now as they were thousands of years ago.
So folks, let’s not overlook this vital part of Scripture and embrace the Old Testament in our teachings and see how it enriches our faith and equips us to engage with the world around us more effectively.
