Thoughts From Psalm 143:10

In Psalm 143:10 David writes from a place of desperation. He feels faint, pursued by enemies, and overwhelmed by the silence of God. He doesn’t come with answers or strength, but with an open and humble heart. In the middle of his distress, his greatest prayer is not for immediate rescue or relief, but for instruction and direction.

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.”

Folks, this is a prayer of surrender. To ask God to teach us is to admit we don’t already know the way. It’s to confess that our own wisdom is insufficient and our instincts can lead us astray. David grounds this request in his relationship with God when he says, for you are my God. Because Yahovah is his God, he can trust that God’s will isn’t burdensome or cruel, but good and loving. The God who teaches us is the same God who has claimed us as His own.

David also recognizes he can’t follow God’s will in his own power. He asks for the Spirit to lead him. He calls Him your gracious Spirit, a reminder that the Holy Spirit doesn’t lead us toward harm or confusion, but toward life and goodness. Without the Spirit, even knowing God’s will wouldn’t be enough, for we would lack the strength to walk in it.

And where does the Spirit lead? God’s Spirit leads to firm footing, to stability and safety. Now, that doesn’t mean a life without difficulties, but a life of steady faith, where we are held upright by God’s grace and guided step by step.

Folks, this verse invites us to make this prayer our own. In the midst of decisions, anxiety, or weariness, pause and pray. Lord, teach me. Lead me. Soften my heart to want your will more than my own comfort. Trust that His Spirit is present with you, ready to guide you, and able to bring you to firm footing.
