Genesis 4 tells the story of Cain and Abel, the first children born into a fallen world. Cain brought an offering to God, but his heart was not right, and when God accepted Abel’s offering, Cain’s anger burned. God warned him that sin was crouching at the door, but Cain gave in and murdered his brother. When confronted, Cain answered with the famous question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The chapter ends with Cain’s exile and the birth of Seth, through whom hope continued.
Chapter 4 confronts us with the reality of sin in our lives. Like Cain, we face moments when anger, jealousy, or resentment crouch at the door of our hearts. God’s warning to Cain is a warning to us, we can master sin through His help, or it will master us. The question “Am I my brother’s keeper?” still echoes. We are called to care for others, not to harm them, not to ignore them, and not to let pride keep us from reconciliation. Folks unchecked sin always costs more than we expect.
Something to think about… When sin crouches at the door of your heart, will you open it or turn to God for strength to overcome?
